Jack Pyke

Just before Christmas 2012. I received a message from Glenn over at Thatchreed.

I can hear you asking who? Well Thatchreed are the parent company of WEB-TEX, Viper and Jack Pyke.WEB-TEX supply military gear to our British forces, and a lot of the Airsoft and paintball teams use the viper gear as well as a lot of private security firms.
Well during our conversation “I said to Glenn I am a hunter, out in everything Mother Nature can send at me”. So, Glenn said “I got the perfect things here. Our new 3in 1 jacket and our Viper boots”
So 2 days later a very large box turned up on my doorstep containing the boots and jacket,

I will start with the boots.
Their claim is 100% waterproof, big claim, so on with the boots, on with the bath 8 inches of water, and 20mins later dry feet.  How silly would I of looked if they weren’t, as my 3 kids being very curious stood watching their Dad jump in the bath with his boots on. These boots have 1200D nylon insert panels in the upper ankles and the top part of the foot. Mixed with full grain leather. These boots are built tough, very tough! After 6 months everyday hard use I have not yet beaten them, which is a good sign, they come with 2 pairs of laces and a washable cushion insole. Worth £10.The insoles have a plastic pad on the ball of the foot and one in the heel, they are also an odorless model, handy when you spend up to 18 hours a day in boots. To lace them up you use the non-metallic speed lacing system, yes you read that correct the eyelets are made from really tough plastic. It saves on weight and does not draw on your feet like normal boots.
After 6 months they look new.
Sizes are from 4-13
Retailing at £79.95

The jacket looks big and bulky until that is you put it on. The Jacket Glenn sent was in XXXL, but being 6’2” it fits fine. I found living down here in Devon having both jackets zipped together was just a bit too hot for me, so have been using them as 2 separate items.
The outer Jacket is large fairly light weight and breathable using their special mix of Outer shell: 100% Polyester brushed tricot with laminated membrane. Lining: 100% Polyester brushed mesh & taffeta.
The outer jacket has a lot of features including a full length zip, concealed hood in neck pocket. 2 bellow pockets with cartridge holders. 2 hand warmer pockets, 1 internal chest pocket, fold down waterproof seat flap / game pocket. Elasticated inner cuffs with sleeve adjusters
Main cargo pockets showing the cartridge holder and over 30 shells in the pocket still with lots of space.

The rear zip out flap doubles as a waterproof seat, and a game pouch. Being over 12” when open it serves its purpose well.
Made of this Tricot material it’s a soft velvety feel, it’s warm to the touch and waterproof and windproof. I have been out in everything Mother Nature has to offer Form driving blizzards, Torrential rain and minus temperatures, I can honestly say this is the best hunting coat I have ever had. The inner fleece is a very good item with waist pulls and thumb holes in the cuffs
The fleece has some special features of its own, with a single inner pocket and a double one shown in the above picture. Along with very large hand warmer pockets, the inner pockets and the thumb holes, this fleece looks good feels good and is smart enough to wear as a day jacket
.The fleece hand warmer pockets, large enough to fit standard can in.

The pockets on the outer coat are as follows the 2 cargo pockets with shell holders. 2 hand warmer pockets. A hidden inner pocket useful for permissions, certificates and mobile phone.

The jacket is available in plain green or jacks own English oak pattern. I would have loved to have the inner fleece in just plain green, as it could be worn in the field or the high street.

But other than that I cannot fault the workmanship of either of the coasts, I have even had no loose threads or problems. With chunky zips and coated press studs on pockets and flaps they have thought of everything , the material is very quiet and rustle free,a  thing a hunter looks for. The only time I’ve worn both jackets was out Lamping till 3 am, when I was glad of the extra warmth.

Retailing at £139.00 for either colour.
